About Fergus Garrett
Raised in the United Kingdom and Turkey, Fergus studied horticulture at Wye College graduating in 1989. He has held the position of Head Gardener at Great Dixter since 1993. He is a hands-on gardener and plantsman who has a keen interest in working practices. It was from the charismatic gardener and writer Christopher Lloyd (1921-2006) and his unique gardening skills that Fergus learnt to keep the gardens of Great Dixter constantly changing throughout the seasons and to be adventurous in trying out new plants and plant combinations.

About the Garden
Set on 9 sprawling acres, The Sumacs features a stately home designed by Ehrick Rossiter and built in 1894. Rock outcroppings, specimen trees, boxwood hedges, and gardens surround the house. Within the gates, there is a formal potager enclosed by a hedge of yews, a cutting garden, orchard, and perennial gardens that make an elegant nod to the classic English garden. A hidden woodland trail that includes a continued array of specimen trees, shrubs, and shade-loving perennials completes the landscape.
