First Fridays

On the first Friday in June, July and August the garden will be open to visitors from 6-8 (in addition to our regular open hours).

As the light fades and day turns to evening enjoy the company of friends and the beauty of the garden. Come, have a glass of wine and delight in the intimate outdoor spaces, bordered by dramatic hedges and overflowing with exuberant plantings. A prefect start to a summer weekend.

Reservations are not required.

A $10 per person donation is requested (includes a glass of wine)

Plein Air Painters and Photographers

The Stars of Summer:Clematis Rendered in Pan Pastel and Colored Pencil

On Thursday July 11, 2019

Event Time 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Layering pan pastels and colored pencils is a dynamic technique that creates vibrant color and delicate details.

Using close observation, you will learn to create the texture and form needed to render a clematis plant including the flowers, buds , leaves and climbing vine. You will begin with a graphite sketch of your plant arranging the plant parts into a composition. Next you will render your artwork using pan pastels to lay down large areas of color and the pencils for the fine details.

Maximum 10 students. A two day workshop  Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12 from 10-3:30

Please bring a bag lunch. Water, soft drinks and snacks will be provided. A materials list will be emailed with your registration confirmation.

This workshop is taught by Jeanne Reiner, co-founder of Tri-State Botanical Artists. She is a nationally recognized botanical artist who holds a certificate in botanical art from the New York Botanical Garden where she also teaches. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States.

A Day with Daylilies - Watercolor Workshop with Betsy Rogers-Knox

On Friday August 2, 2019

Event Time 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Capture the graceful, large blossoms of Hemerocallis, Latin for “Beauty for a Day.” In this one day step-by-step workshop the focus will be on portraying the colorful blossoms using a variety of watercolor techniques including layering washes of vibrant color.

All levels welcome. Limited to 12 participants.

This workshop meets on Friday, August  from 10-3:30.

A materials list will be emailed with your registration confirmation.

Please bring a bag lunch – water, soft drinks and snacks will be provided.

The watercolor workshops at Hollister House Garden are taught by Betsy Rogers-Knox. Betsy received a Certificate in Botanical Illustration from NYBG in 2006. Her work has been widely exhibited in the United States and at the Royal Horticultural Botanical Art Shoe in London where she was awarded the Silver Gilt Award.

Flower Arranging from the Garden

On Friday August 9, 2019

Event Time 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This workshop will explore the joys of creating a seasonal floral design foraged from one’s own garden, the fields and woods. Horticulturalist and landscape designer Deborah Munson will begin by introducing you to her work and reviewing the tools of the trade. She wil then lead a walk through Hollister House Garden discussing floral design, structure and color. Following your time in the garden the group will return to the barn to create a design on your own.

Please bring your own glass or ceramic container. All floral material will be provided.

This workshop is strictly limited to 15 participants.

Deborah Munson is a horticulturalist and landscape designer working here in the northwest corner. Deborah combines her passion for garden history and ecological and sustainable design into the projects and properties she designs and oversees. She has co-chaired and consulted on Trade Secrets for many years.
